Corque Debuts Sustainable Home Furnishing Designs That Really Put a Cork in It
Cork is one of the most flexible and sustainable materials in the world, and it makes great furniture too! As it turns out, anywhere from 50 to 70% of all the world’s cork is produced in teeny Portugal. Ana Mestre and Gonçalo Riscado of CORQUE Design have thoroughly researched the product before creating a line of cork-based products that are at once beautiful and renewable. 
Boiled, cork turns dark and husky, varnished, it can be kept in the sun, and mixed with rubber (hopefully recycled), it creates a material that is similar to but much more sustainable than leather. These are just some of the many minimalist applications on show as part of the NY Design Week.
So if you are attend Meatpacking Design and scoop up a stool or beads, feel comfortable knowing that the product you have purchased is totally natural and renewable and makes a positive cultural and social impact at the source.
