guest post: mammoth collections.

ive been really impressed with the artwork mammoth collections is introducing us to these days, so i thought id invite ben at mammoth to share some his favourites today. thanks, ben!

When Victoria asked me if I wanted to write a guest post for SFGirl, my first thought (after a hearty woot!) was to talk a little about the various trends that seem to be making waves in the art world recently. One of the most interesting parts of running The Mammoth Collection is seeing which art people are drawn to, and when, and then trying to figure out why (geometric shapes are really big right now, by the way).

But then I got thinking about what it is I love best about working at Mammoth, and in the end it all comes back to the same reason we started the collection in the first place: Im a sucker for The Print.

Sure, the internet has revolutionized how we view and engage with art, and theres a lot to be said for how easy it is to access so much great work from so many great artists, but when all is said and done, there can really be no replacement for holding a real live print in your hands. The smell, the weight and texture of the paper, the three-dimensionality of it: when youre holding a print, youre holding an artifact, something thats more than just an idea. You put it on the wall and it lives with you, it shares your space, and over time it becomes a part of your whole experience. Pretty nifty, no?

So instead of waxing on about the future of photography or the resurgence of collage in contemporary art, I thought Id just share a few of my favourite prints from the collection. I love all the art we showcase at Mammoth, but these are the pieces I feel closest to personally for one reason or another. Ive printed them, held them, hung them on my walls. They make up, in more ways than one, a big and oh-so-important part of my everyday life.
